That way you can clamp small self-made insert plates between these two jaw-like sliders. These insert plates could then be routed with various router bits. This way you would have inserts that provide maximum support when routing smaller pieces of wood (i.e. the hole in your fence would be the same shape as the bit). I have wondered ...
