As far as I remember none of these faults had anything to do with the lifetime of the car and more to do with crashing it. And all the european makes recall a lot of cars. But they sell fewer cars too (per brand? and model), and they don't make a hubbub about denying the problem. Back to the point, only a Toyota would survive the abuse Top gear put their Hilux trough. And it is half the price of anything close to it. More, for less TCO.

Well that's debatable. Toyota recalled many cars in the last few years because of faults. I? agree that Japan makes good cars.

Actually, nothing outlasts Toyotas, they will? run until they are a pile of rust. If you can turn the ignition it'll run. True, it is a piece of junk after 5 years, but they do refuse to die. (on average 50% longer than european cars) Not counting body replacement etc. European cars are usually better maintained because they are more expensive, hence richer owner. But the Japs. have it nailed relative to cost (maintenance and buying)
