That's cool. I respect yours too, though ours have differed so far. I think Streep's character struggled psychologically also, we could? say, but in a way concerning pessimism; her not having any faith in man. When she told Hoffman's character that she would do whatever it took to bring him down, "though it damn her to hell", I think that displayed her faith in God. When she told Sister James that stepping away from God to address wrongdoing was "in his service", I think displayed it too.

Streep's character's doubt in faith shows through? in certain dialogue - for example, the line from the trailer, where Streep's chracter says 'You just want things to be resolved, so you can have simplicity back'.

I have seen the film in its entirety, a couple of times. I understand that interpretations of this film will always differ, naturally, so I respect yours. I however do believe that Streep's character was struggling psychologically, and most definitely doubting her faith - consequentially to protect her ego, displacement came about (it was probably exagerated due to the fact that the problem of? doubting her faith in this situation is particularly distressing for her given she is a nun.)

Just because she was an admitted pessimist doesn't mean she was struggling "psychologically", as you suggested. Streep's character seemed able to deal with anything, especially negativity, which all others shied away from. Hoffman's character, the priest, admitted to his folly/sin, and resigned, just? as Streep told him to. So, obviously he was guilty, by his own resignation. Feel free to respond. You don't think so? Did you see the film in it's entirety? I'll suggest watching it a couple of times; maybe even more, to help become very familiar with it (it deserves the attention anyhow, being modified into a film version, from a stage-play). Why not morality, specifically? To say the film was about "doubt" alone is a mistake, I think. And, I would argue that Streep's character manifested the most robust case for faith over? any other. I see no reason to think she doubted her faith at all.

I never even heard of this movie but it is beyond words...this is a? great movie and I do not understand how a movie like this goes without honors. both Philip Hoffman and Meryle Streep should have revieved acadamy awards for their work.
