By: Jerominus77. on 08 Oct 11, 13:57:12 this is the one most amazing scene in Molier that prefigures (as in retrospect) the author's legacy into the the centuries to follow and up to now.

I wasn't 20 when I saw it. I knew I've had the chance to? see a real masterpiece. This is still a vivid memory.
Yet, almost 30 years later I still consider Ariane Mnouchkine's film one of the most impressive piece of the 7th Art.

Odd that it would be one 39 years old,? which only reminds me of the lack of creativity, compassion and the marriage of the two in the visual arts recently. This movie was beautiful. And instead goes off, alone, to nature and his family's grave markers, to begin coping with his child being wrenched from his love. Things that money can't price. And how clearly his heart's memory sees the boy's (undying) innocence. This man may not be able to read his own name. To many, he'd be "dumb trash." But he's got a PhD in THE SOUL.

How quickly those ... By: roscoefoofoo. on 29 Nov 10, 06:30:01 How quickly those golden moments of raising a child pass by in time, yet endure in the heart. Good parenting instincts: distracts the boy from death/loss issues he's not ready for, with play, hope, and a hug. The difference between law & justice, custody & love, status & substance. His capacity for paradox: "I been expectin' it. I reckon that's why it took me so by surprise."? Those left-on-the-ground whimpers, from a man so stoic and dignified: heartbreak will make itself heard.

The circle of love ... By: roscoefoofoo. on 29 Nov 10, 06:40:27 The circle of love is only way to cope with, or break,? the chain of pain. No wonder Fentryis so loving: look at how loving his own father is. "Come on over here to me, Jacskon & Longstreet Fentry." Puts giving the newborn love in terms of inviting the newborn to join him. The heart is the home. Kid brings smiling play to tough lives. They put him in the middle--as his innocence and deservedness are at their lives' center. Stop to let him be a kid. Puddles must be magic. Love takes the reins.

Can you come with me?" "I'll be right there." Kindness in crisis. Leaning on love when facing pain and fear. These people pass the tests that count most. ? "Are you warmer now?"
His longer-than- ... By: roscoefoofoo. on 29 Nov 10, 06:19:37 His longer-than-expected absence restarts her abandonment fears. Made all the worse by her newly raised--and risked--hopes of having someone who's truly loyal. So beautiful that when he returns, she can't directly express affection and release--so she pets the mule instead. That mule is great stand-in for Fentry's mule-like reliability. He's stubbornly caring. He intuits part of her refusal to? marry him is her fear of being abandoned again--so he asks her again. Noble needs, put so subtly.
How she reaches out ... By: roscoefoofoo. on 23 Oct 10, 14:34:41 How she reaches out to stitch together his tatters, after she's shared her own through-all-the-tatters dream of a Home. Her hand lingering on his shoulder. She knows he's thinking of wanting to marry her, and of her rejection of him. So he turns his back to cope with the hurt of? loyalty offered, tenderness returned, but marriage denied. Her pausing look to see if he'll still follow their path. Her lonely, worried waiting, fearing he'll now leave her, too. Stoic eloquence.

Shares her former worst worries--but now she again hopes, in shared terms: "So I guess we don't have to? worry about this rain bein' the end of world." The cut to the modest forest flowers after she shares her reborn hopes. Life is growing, from painfully barren ground. He proposes while boiling her clothes. Sharing the hopes & memories that endure pain. "Can you swim? I can't either." Show me where you'll build your home, indeed.

How he looks to the ceiling when she's telling about the preacher who couldn't walk on water. She's hopeful but reasoning and realistic--balanced despite all she's been through. Confess their limits to each other. With the kindness he's given her, she puts positive spin on things. With his loyal kindness, she longer worries about the end of the world.
